Winter Camping in Northern Sweden - Experience the Arctic
There is something special about winter in northern Sweden. When the snow arrives, the landscape changes completely. Forests turn white, lakes freeze and the days become quiet and still. Further north, winter is not just a season. It becomes a way of experiencing nature.
For those looking for an Arctic experience away from busy tourist destinations, winter camping in northern Sweden is a chance to spend more time outdoors and experience the wilderness up close.
Here at Petter Karlsson Sleddogs, winter camping is part of our longer dog sledding expeditions. With us you can experience winter camping as part of an adventure where you travel through the Arctic landscape together with a team of sled dogs.
What Makes Winter Camping in Sweden Special?
Winter camping gives you the opportunity to experience the Swedish wilderness at a completely different time of year. The snow-covered forests become almost silent. Frozen lakes stretch out between the trees and, on clear nights, the sky can light up with the Northern Lights. Spending the night camping also gives you the chance to experience the landscape after the day’s journey is over and to be even closer to your dog team.
During an expedition, the days are spent travelling through the snow and working with the dogs. In the evening, you settle into camp, make a fire, prepare a warm meal and enjoy the stillness of the Arctic surroundings. It is a more immersive way to experience northern Sweden than simply visiting the landscape for a few hours.
Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve - The Arctic Landscape of Northern Sweden
Northern Sweden is home to some of the country’s most remote and beautiful landscapes. In Swedish Lapland, you can find vast forests, mountains, frozen lakes and large areas of wilderness. One of the most well-known areas is Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve, one of Europe’s largest protected mountain areas.
The landscape around Vindelfjällen is shaped by mountains, valleys, rivers and long winters. The area is also home to a wide range of wildlife, including reindeer, moose and many species adapted to the northern climate. This is the environment where our longer dog sledding expeditions take place.
Experience the Arctic by Dog Sled
Dog sledding is a natural way to travel through the landscape of northern Sweden. There is something special about being out on the trail with a team of dogs.
Travelling by dog sled also allows you to reach places that would be difficult to explore on foot and is forbidden to access via snowmobile. You can cross frozen lakes, travel through snow-covered forests and spend the day surrounded by wilderness. But it is not only about the journey.
Spending time with the dogs is an important part of the experience. You get to see how they work together, learn how to handle the sled and become part of the team.
For many guests, this becomes one of the most memorable parts of their time in northern Sweden.
Winter Camping as Part of a Dog Sledding Expedition
For us, winter camping is not simply about spending a night in a tent. It is about making the journey itself part of the experience.
During the day, you help with the dogs, handle the sled and travel across forests and frozen lakes. When it is time to stop for the night, the group sets up camp. The evening is spent outdoors, preparing food, making a fire and taking care of the dogs before settling down for the night. The next morning, the camp is packed up and the journey continues. This means that the camping is an integrated part of the expedition rather than a separate activity.
You do not need to be an experienced winter camper to join us. Our expeditions are guided, and you learn what you need along the way.
