Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve – A Wilderness Adventure

Discover the breathtaking landscapes of Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve, one of Sweden’s largest protected areas and one of the biggest in Europe, covering around 565,000 hectares. Vindelfjällen stretches from forests and wetlands to high mountains and glacial valleys. The highest peak, Norra Sytertoppen, reaches 1,768 metres, and the lowest point, Jilliesnållie by Storvindeln, is 342 metres. Vindelfjällen is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts seeking pure wilderness, rare wildlife, and unforgettable adventures.

What Makes Vindelfjällen Special

Vindelfjällen has been shaped over millions of years by glaciers and geological forces. The area has mountains, valleys, lakes, rivers, and some of Sweden’s deepest caves. Many rivers run freely without dams, keeping the environment natural and untouched. It’s a place where the landscapes feel truly wild and untouched. What makes it even more special is the living culture here – traditional Sámi life and reindeer herding are still a part of everyday life, giving anyone who visits a real sense of the region’s history and its people.

Wildlife and Plants

The reserve is full of life. Birch forests, wetlands, and alpine areas provide homes for many animals: reindeer, moose, lynx, wolverines, or even brown bears. Birds are everywhere, including golden eagles and ptarmigans. The Arctic fox is one of the rare and special species in the reserve. We don’t usually spot these animals during the tour, but we very often come across their tracks and remains.

People and Culture

Vindelfjällen is also a living cultural landscape. People have lived and hunted here for thousands of years. Today, three Sámi communities continue traditional reindeer herding, keeping their heritage alive. Visitors can see how nature and culture have existed together for centuries.
