Tips for Your Layover in Stockholm

Make the Most of Your Time in Sweden’s Capital!

Whether you have just a few hours or a full day between flights or trains, Stockholm is well worth exploring. Many of our guests pass through the city on their way north to us, and we often get the question: “What should we see if we only have a short stop?”

Here are our personal tips:

If You Only Have 3-4 Hours

If your layover is short, stay central and keep it simple.

Walk Through Gamla Stan (Old Town)

Gamla Stan is the heart of Stockholm. Narrow cobblestone streets, colorful houses, small cafés and quiet corners. It’s easy to reach from Stockholm Central Station and perfect for a relaxed walk.

Grab a coffee, enjoy the atmosphere, and just wander.

Visit the Vasa Museum

Vasa Museum is one of the most impressive museums in Scandinavia. The 17th-century warship sank on its first voyage and was recovered almost perfectly preserved. Even if you’re not into history, it’s hard not to be amazed.

Abba the museum

ABBA The Museum is fun, interactive and very Swedish in its own way. It’s a good option if you want something light and entertaining during a short stop.

If You Have a Full Day in Stockholm

Walk along the water

Stockholm is built on islands, and the water is always close. One of the best ways to experience the city during a layover is simply to go for a walk along the waterfront. You don’t need a plan – just follow the water and see where it takes you.

Strandvägen and Östermalm

Start at Nybroplan and walk along Strandvägen towards Djurgården. This is one of the most beautiful streets in Stockholm, with wide sidewalks, boats in the harbor and impressive buildings. It’s an easy and relaxing walk, especially if the sun is out. You’ll see locals out for a jog, families with strollers, and cafés along the way.

Djurgården

From Strandvägen you can continue onto Djurgården. Here it feels more like nature, even though you are still in the city. Wide walking paths, trees, open water and quiet spots to sit down for a while. It’s a good place if you want fresh air and a slower pace before heading further north.

Södermalm - For the Best Views

If you want great views, head to Södermalm. Walk along the waterfront at Hornstulls strand for a relaxed atmosphere by the water.

For one of the best views in Stockholm, walk up to Monteliusvägen on Mariaberget. From there you look out over the City Hall, Riddarfjärden and the rooftops of the old town. It’s especially beautiful in the evening light.

Try swedish meatballs - a classic you should not miss

If you have a layover in Stockholm, you should take the chance to try Swedish meatballs. It’s a simple dish, but when it’s made the right way, it’s something special. Served with creamy mashed potatoes, lingonberries and a rich brown sauce – it’s real Swedish comfort food.

For a traditional experience, I can recommend Tennstopet. It’s a classic Stockholm restaurant with a long history, and they serve Swedish home-style cooking in a cozy, old-fashioned setting.

If you’re near Östermalm, you can also visit Östermalms Saluhall, where several counters serve classic Swedish dishes in a lively food hall setting.

If you’re in Stockholm’s Old Town and want to try classic Swedish meatballs, Slingerbulten is a cozy, well‑known option right on Stora Nygatan. This traditional restaurant focuses on real Swedish home‑style dishes, including meatballs along with other local favorites like pickled herring and hearty stews.

Try swedish fika - and don't miss a semla

No visit to Sweden is complete without trying Swedish fika – a cozy coffee break with a sweet treat. If you’re passing through Stockholm, it’s the perfect way to relax, enjoy the local atmosphere, and watch the city go by.

If you’re visiting in February, be sure to try a semla: a soft cardamom bun filled with almond paste and whipped cream. It’s a classic Swedish treat that belongs on your bucket list.

Two of our favorite spots for fika are Stora Bageriet on Östermalm, with its traditional pastries and warm café vibe, and Lillbrors Bageri in Vasastan, a smaller, cozy bakery that makes some of the best semlor in the city. Sit down, have a coffee, and enjoy a true taste of Swedish culture before continuing your journey.

Make the most of your layover

Even if your time in Stockholm is short, there’s plenty to see, taste, and experience. Wander the cobbled streets of Gamla Stan, enjoy the waterfront views, try classic Swedish meatballs, and don’t forget a cozy fika. Enjoy the city, and make your layover a memorable part of your adventure!
