Traveling to us is an adventure from the very start. Many of our guests choose the night train in Sweden to reach northern Sweden, arriving rested and ready for a day on the sled with our huskies. Here’s everything you need to know about how to get here to Petter Karlsson Sleddogs and make your journey smooth and enjoyable.
Why Take the Night Train in Sweden
A journey by night train is a truly special way to travel. You step on board in the evening and fall asleep as the train quietly rolls north — only to wake up the next morning more than 600 km further into Sweden. Along the way, you can enjoy snow-covered landscapes passing by, a relaxed breakfast in the onboard bistro, and the chance to meet fellow travelers. And best of all, traveling by night train is a comfortable and environmentally friendly way to reach the North.
Planning Your Trip
There are various routes available on the night train, but the connection most frequently used by our guests is probably the one from Stockholm to Umea. Alternatively, there are also connections from Hamburg or Gothenburg. Tickets can be booked at sj.se.
From the Train Station to Petter Karlsson Sleddogs
Once you arrive in Umea, cross the street and you will find the Umea bus station, where you can take line 31 to Hemavan/Tärnaby. This will take you to Slussfors (please get off at the “Slussfors” stop and NOT at the first “Slussfors, E12” stop or at the shop/petrol station where the bus sometimes stops to deliver packages). Use the bus ride to spot your first reindeer and maybe even some moose.
💡 Tip: Sit at the front of the bus, as this gives you a good view of any reindeer and moose that may be on the road.
Tips for your night train journey
1. Sleeping car
Don’t cut corners and book a berth in a sleeping compartment instead of a cheap seat—your back will thank you on the sleddog tour ahead!
There is either the couchette with 6 people and a toilet in the hallway or, alternatively, the sleeping compartment with 3 beds and its own sink as well as access to the showers in the hallway.

2. Use your layover time for sightseeing
The big advantage of traveling by train is that you arrive right in the city center. Explore downtown Stockholm or enjoy a stroll through Umea.
3. Travel equipment for the train
A sleep mask and earplugs are recommended for the night, especially for sensitive sleepers. Since there is often not much space in the compartment itself, you should have everything you need ready in a small bag without having to unpack half your suitcase.
