December Holidays in Swedish Lapland: A Husky Safari You’ll Never Forget
The December holidays have a special kind of magic — a mix of anticipation, reflection and the desire to experience something meaningful. While many people spend December surrounded by festive lights and familiar traditions, travelling to Swedish Lapland transforms the season into something extraordinary. Here, winter is not just a backdrop; it’s an entire world of snow‑covered forests, frozen lakes, crisp Arctic air and the soft glow of the Northern Lights. And at the heart of it all lies one of the most unforgettable adventures you can choose for your December holidays: a Husky Safari with Petter Karlsson Sleddogs.
Whether you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, planning a unique New Year’s Eve, or simply looking for a December holiday that breaks away from the ordinary, our multi‑day husky tours offer the perfect blend of wilderness, tradition and adventure.
What to Expect From Your December Holidays in Swedish Lapland
December marks the start of the deep Arctic winter. Days are short, the air is crisp, and the landscape is wrapped in thick snow. The low winter sun gives us the spectacular light from a sunrise into a sunset and paints the sky in soft pastels. And even as we have only four hours of daylight, this raises our chances of seeing the Northern Lights dancing above the horizon already in the early evening.
On our Husky Safari, you’ll spend five days exploring Vindelfjällens Nature Reserve — Europe’s largest protected wilderness. You’ll learn how to care for and drive your own team of Alaskan Huskies, world‑class athletes trained by world champion musher Petter Karlsson. With a maximum of four guests per tour, the experience is intimate, personal and deeply connected to nature.
Each day on the sled brings something new: frozen lakes, ancient spruce forests, mountain views and the quiet beauty of untouched snow. December conditions can be cold and adventurous, therefore it is important that you pack properly for your dogsledding adventure.
A Christmas Like No Other
If you’ve ever dreamed of a Christmas wrapped in snow and silence, December in Lapland delivers. Our Christmas Dog Sledding holidays combine festive traditions with wilderness living. You’ll celebrate Christmas Eve in a rustic cabin, surrounded by candlelight, the crackle of the wood stove and the soft sounds of the dogs resting outside.
Guests help fetch water from nearby springs or rivers, light fires, prepare meals and care for the huskies — creating a sense of togetherness that feels far more meaningful than any traditional holiday celebration. It’s simple, warm and unforgettable.
After returning from the trail, we gather at the guesthouse for a festive meal. Guests share stories from around the world, toast to the holiday and enjoy a cosy evening in true Scandinavian style. It’s a Christmas that stays with you long after you’ve returned home.

New Year’s Eve in the Arctic Wilderness
New Year’s Eve in Swedish Lapland is equally magical. Instead of fireworks and crowded streets, you’ll welcome the new year surrounded by snowy forests, star‑filled skies and the possibility of the Northern Lights. Our New Year’s dog sledding tours follow the same structure as the Husky Safari, but with a festive twist.
Imagine ending the year by driving your own husky team through pristine winter landscapes — and beginning the next one with a warm dinner, laughter and the camaraderie of your small group. It’s peaceful, meaningful and unlike any New Year’s celebration you’ve ever experienced. And maybe we are lucky enough to witness our very own version of fireworks that will light up the sky 😉

What to Expect From Your December Holidays in Swedish Lapland
We live in the small village, called Slussfors in northern Sweden and if you’re travelling in December, you can easily combine your Husky Safari with a visit to one of Sweden’s atmospheric Christmas markets — perfect for adding a festive touch to your Arctic adventure.
Stockholm Christmas Markets
Before flying north, spend a day in Stockholm’s historic Gamla Stan. The Stortorgets Julmarknad is one of Sweden’s oldest Christmas markets, located right on the medieval square Stortorget. It offers traditional crafts, sweets and warm drinks in a postcard‑perfect setting.
Skansen also hosts a charming Christmas market with Swedish traditions, music and seasonal food.
Umeå Christmas Market
If you pass through Umeå, you’ll find smaller local markets and festive events around the city. The Marknadsplats Umeå hosts seasonal markets, and the Västerbottens Museum often features winter activities and cultural events.
Jokkmokk Christmas & Winter Market
If your route takes you further north (can be reached by bus from us), Jokkmokk is famous for its winter market traditions. While the main Jokkmokk Winter Market takes place in February, the town itself offers cosy shops and seasonal events throughout December.
Visiting one of these markets before or after your safari adds a festive, cultural layer to your December holiday — from traditional Swedish crafts to warm glögg and handmade treats.
Tip: To add a little extra to your adventure (and make it even a bit more sustainable) by travelling with the famous arctic night train through Sweden!
