Best Time to go Dog Sledding in Lapland – Month-by-Month Guide

When is the best time to go dogsledding in Lapland?

One of the most common questions we get is: “When is the best time to go dog sledding?” The truth is, every part of the season offers something unique, from the magical polar nights of December to the sunny daylight of spring.

To help you choose the best time for your visit, we’ve put together a month-by-month guide explaining what makes each part of the sledding season special. Whether you’re looking for deep winter silence, northern lights, or sunny spring tours, there’s a perfect time for everyone.*

*Please note that this overview reflects our average experience from recent decades — naturally, conditions may vary.

December - The Beginning of Winter Magic

December is the beginning of the dog sledding season. Fresh snow covers the landscape, and the short days create a magical winter feeling. We will also spend time on the sled during the so-called ‘blue hour,’ as well as in total darkness with our headlamps. The long, dark nights also give you a chance to see the Northern Lights dancing in the sky. Why not spend your Christmas dog sledding?

January - Deep Winter Adventures

January is the coldest month of the year and a great time for a true Arctic experience. The snow is deep, and the first rays of the sun shine through the trees. The trails are perfect for long dog sledding tours, and the nights are dark enough for the Northern Lights.

February - Northern Lights and Perfect Trails

In February, the days start to get longer, but the nights are still dark enough to see the Northern Lights. The cold remains steady, and the snow and trails are usually in their best condition. With the sun on our faces, we get to see some of the most beautiful spots in Lapland.

March - Longer Days and Warmer Sun

March is one of our favorite times of the season. The sun is stronger, and the days are much longer, allowing us to see more of the landscape from the sled. The snow is still excellent for sledding, and with slightly warmer temperatures, it’s also more comfortable.

April - Spring Adventures Under the Midnight Sun

April brings the feeling of spring to the Arctic. The days are very long, sometimes up to 16-18 hours of daylight  and the weather is mild and pleasant. It’s the perfect time for relaxed sledding tours and enjoying the beautiful scenery and going on our Wilderness Expeditions with camping.

*Snow usually lasts until mid-May, though in rare cases it melts earlier. The final tours can be a bit more adventurous — but so far, none have ever been cancelled!

When is the best time to go dog sledding if you want to see the northern lights?

The best time to see them on our husky adventures is between December and the middle of March, since there is a longer period of darkness over the day. Read more about dog sledding northern lights.
