Have you ever heard of Amundsen, Nansen or Shackleton? Their stories have fascinated generations of adventurers: days spent far from civilisation, travelling through landscapes where nature sets the rules and every decision matters. While our Arctic Expedition is a long way from the historic polar expeditions of these explorers, it offers a chance to experience some of that same feeling of remoteness, teamwork and adventure.
For seven days (total lengths of the tour is 9 days), we leave the roads and everyday life behind and head into the winter wilderness of northern Sweden. With your own team of huskies in front of you, you’ll travel through the mountains, forests and frozen lakes of the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve. There is no sightseeing bus, no fixed itinerary and no comfortable hotel waiting for you at the end of the day. Instead, there is your sled, your dogs, a small group of fellow adventurers and the landscape stretching out in every direction.
Arctic Expedition in Swedish Lapland
The heart of our Arctic Expedition is the time we spend travelling. After learning the basics and getting to know your dogs, you’ll set off each morning with your own team. Over seven days on the trail, we cover around 250 kilometres, adapting our route to the weather, snow and conditions we find along the way.
Driving a sled means being part of the team. You’ll learn to read the trail, handle your sled and work together with your dogs. When the terrain becomes difficult, everyone gets involved. Sometimes that means stepping off the sled and helping your team up a hill or through deep snow. At other times, it simply means watching the dogs, reading the landscape and finding a steady rhythm for the journey.
It’s this active role that makes an Arctic Expedition so different. You’re not just travelling through the wilderness – you’re learning how to move through it.
Wilderness Camping and Life on the Trail
As the day comes to an end, we make camp. Depending on the route and conditions, we sleep in simple wilderness cabins or expedition tents, usually far from any roads or settlements. There is no electricity or running water. Instead, we melt snow or collect water, light the stove, take care of the dogs and prepare dinner together.
After hours outside, these simple routines become part of the adventure. We gather around the fire, warm up, eat together and talk about the day. Outside, the wilderness is quiet and the night sky stretches above us. On a clear evening, there may even be another adventure waiting overhead: the Northern Lights.
Dog Sledding in the Swedish Wilderness
An Arctic Expedition is as much about the people and the dogs as it is about the landscape. Our groups are limited to a maximum of four guests, which means we spend the entire journey together as a small team. Everyone has a role, everyone helps out and everyone experiences the highs and challenges of the trail together.
You don’t need previous dog sledding experience to join us. What matters is having some experience with outdoor life, being comfortable with camping and being ready for long days outside in winter conditions. You should also be prepared for temperatures that can drop below -20°C and have a good level of fitness, as helping your dogs through deep snow or uphill sections is sometimes part of the journey.
